isthisemailascam.com is a static website: there are no accounts, no logins and no database of visitors. This page explains what is and isn't collected, and by whom.

What you type into the link checker and the guide search

The link checker and the guide search run entirely in your web browser, on your own device. They never send what you type to us or to anyone else:

  • There's no form that submits anything. What you type is never put into a web address (so it never appears in the page addresses that analytics records), into the page's title, or into cookies or your browser's storage.
  • Nothing is saved: we never store what you type. If you leave the page and come back with your browser's Back button, your browser may still show it from its own memory, so press “Clear the box” when you're done.
  • Spell-check is switched off in both tools' boxes, so your browser's spelling service doesn't see the text either.
  • The link checker and the guide search themselves make no network requests and send no analytics events, so this site passes nothing you type to anyone.
  • Google's ad code runs inside the same page as the link checker and the guide search, to show ads, and Google Analytics runs on both tools' pages, as on every page, to count visits. Any code running in a page could in principle read what's on it, including what you type. We don't send it anything; if that worries you, leave out names and account numbers. Neither tool needs them.

Browser add-ons you've installed yourself can read what's on any page you visit, including this one. That's outside our control, but worth knowing.

Cookies and advertising

This site is paid for by advertising, shown through Google AdSense on most pages (not on this one, the about and contact pages, the "page not found" page, or the “If you clicked” page). Google and its partners use cookies and similar technology to show ads, and may use information about your visits to this and other websites to choose ads for you.

You can turn off personalized ads from Google at Google's My Ad Center. Industry-wide opt-outs are available at YourAdChoices in the United States and Your Online Choices in Europe. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads at policies.google.com.

Google Analytics, which runs on every page (see "Analytics" below), sets two cookies of its own on this site: one named _ga and one whose name starts with _ga_. Google says they are used "to distinguish users" and "to persist session state", and that each lasts up to two years by default. They let Analytics tell that two page views came from the same browser; they hold nothing you type into the link checker or the guide search. You can delete or block them in your browser's settings, and this site works the same without them.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. It records the pages you view, your approximate location (worked out from your internet address) and the general type of device and browser. We use it in total, to decide what to explain next, never to identify anyone. It never receives anything you type into the link checker or the guide search.

Fonts

Our pages use typefaces from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser asks Google's servers for the font files, and like any request your browser makes, that tells Google's servers your internet address and the type of browser you use. Nothing you type into the link checker or the guide search is part of that request.

Hosting

Like any website, the company that hosts this site may keep standard technical logs, such as internet addresses and the pages requested, for security and to keep the site running.

Your rights

If you're in the United Kingdom, the European Union or the European Economic Area, the GDPR gives you rights over personal data held about you, including access, correction and deletion. If you're in California, the CCPA may give you similar rights, including the right to know what's collected and to opt out of its sale, or of its "sharing" for advertising based on your activity across websites. This site doesn't sell personal information. Google's ads may use cookies to personalize ads; you can turn that off with the opt-outs in the advertising section above. There are no accounts here, so apart from the hosting company's standard logs and the Google Analytics records described above, the only records about you are any emails you send us at hello@isthisemailascam.com. If you've written to us, you can ask what we have and ask us to delete it. We'll also gladly point you to the right place for data held by Google for its ads, fonts and analytics.

Children

This site is written for adults and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children.

Links to other sites

Our pages link to government agencies and other organizations. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit them.

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, the date at the top of this page changes with it.
